Storytelling through Photography

October 18 @ 6:00 pm - October 19 @ 7:00 pm

$160

Pete Candler, author of a photography collection, The Road to Unforgetting: Detours in the American South 1997 – 2022, and A Deeper South: The Beauty, Mystery, and Sorrow of the Southern Road will lead the sessions for this photography retreat. His hands-on approach to storytelling will have you taking a look at everyday things in a new light. https://www.petecandler.com/

Cameras are everywhere: on our phones, our cars, in the stores. At no point in prior history have we made a world so constantly seen through a lens. But in our pursuit of omni-photography, have we lost something essential? This retreat will introduce beginners to the practice of film photography, the wonder of the medium of film, and how shooting film can help you develop skills and habits with which to see differently your world and yourself within it. We will also consider how history has been shaped by photography and the link of the WPA Guides to the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum, Historic Dyess Colony: Johnny Cash Boyhood Home, and the entire delta region.

Schedule:
Friday, October 18, 6 PM – 8 PM Southern Tenant Farmers Museum, Tyronza, AR (dinner, tour, session)
Saturday, October 19, 9 AM – 5 PM, Johnny Cash Boyhood Home, Dyess, AR (breakfast, lunch, tour, sessions, photography time)
Saturday, October 19, 5:30 PM – 7 PM Wine tasting in Wilson, AR (wine tasting, light hor d’oeuvres)
