In 1934, during the Great Depression, Northeast Arkansas was at the center of two unique responses to the economic crisis. The federal government chose a swampland in Mississippi County as the site for Farm Resettlement Colony No. 1. A mere 15 miles away that same year, a group of 7 black, and 11 white men agreed to form a fully integrated union of tenant farmers and sharecroppers.
Immerse yourself in the history of the Great Depression, 20th-century agriculture, and influential Americans like Johnny Cash and John Handcox who emerged from these circumstances.
Combine your tour of the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home with the Southern Tenant Farmers Museum in Tyronza to learn more about the histories of Arkansas, Agriculture, and the Great Depression.
